At the Preserve, we only plant native plants to replace invasive plants and increase biodiversity. Native plants are becoming increasingly popular for home and commercial landscaping for a variety of reasons:
Because they evolved together, native plants support native pollinators and wildlife, including butterflies.
Due to their very deep root systems, native plants prevent erosion (once established), do not require water, and benefit the soil.
Native plants are relatively low maintainence: no mowing or fertilizing.
There is a native plant to fit most every gardening niche.
As we’ve done for many years in a row, we’re having a native plant sale in May (see page 2) and just in time for this sale, Tristan Shaw, one of the owners of Possibility Place Nursery in Monee, will discuss the propagation of native plants and the business and philosophy of his native plant nursery. Possibility Place provides the plants for our plant sale and plantings for the Preserve. Following a short talk, Tristan and select members of the board will help attendees design a native garden for their property, taking into account individual soil, moisture and sun conditions. Tables will be set up to allow for planning, and plants on this year's plant sale will be featured and can be ordered at the meeting. You are invited to bring photos and information regarding your property. This is a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of this high level of expertise in choosing plants for your garden.
